2024 Award Winners

Judge Dr Rebecca Coates, Director of Monash University Museum of Art (MUMA)

Major Prize Most Outstanding Work $15,000

Drew Pettifer
Woven by Pam Joyce
Untitled (Monte Punshon)

wool and cotton tapestry
50 x 35 cm
(catalogue number 69)

Dr Rebecca Coates on the prize winning work:

“The winning work is small and discrete.

It is black and white, and employs a technique that traditionally wasn’t used for ‘real’ art: tapestry. Often done collaboratively, tapestry was historically deemed a ‘craft’ – ‘women’s work’ or something usually done by ladies at home.

Today, contemporary artists consistently work across a range of media to explore diverse concepts and ideas. For this work, Drew has worked with weaver Pam Joyce to tell a story about a person in a medium that’s complicated.

The image captures the likeness of a person who was born in the previous century, living to 106.  In their lifetime, they lived through a period of enormous change, including the rise of second wave feminism, gay liberation, and indigenous land rights. At a time when appearances mattered, they refused to be labelled.

Notwithstanding their work as an artist, teacher, and work supporting Japanese prisoners of war during WW2, their greatest claim to fame – very late in their life – was as the oldest person to have come out at 100.

So if we think of the progress we have made as a society and the diverse and inclusive community we work to foster, this work continues to remind us that life is complicated, and the best art offers us space to consider and reflect.”
